Why DIY? The Pros & Cons

A few weeks ago my partner and I spend hours at first the hardware store and then back at home trying to fix our dishwasher connection to our sink. Dismantling both, sizing parts, and doing some serious math and problem solving to create a fix that actually (and surprisingly) works.

Another time my partner insisted he could build his own ramp & stairway for our cats to climb rather than simply buy one at the pet store. After an afternoon filled with swearing and one or two bruised fingers we had a beautiful cat ramp to use.

This isn’t the first time we’ve taken it upon ourselves to fix or build something. But I often question why we do it? Do It Yourself seems like the best way to go. It’s not that hard right?! Why pay someone to do something when you can figure it out yourself? But DIY isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Not all DIY is simple.

If your relationship has ever teetered on the brink of trying to put together a sofa, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Is it really worth the time and energy? And worse, could a lack of experience cost you more down the road?

PROS:
Money Saver – There’s no doubt that DIY can save you some cash. Especially for something that is minor or not seen, like shelves inside your cupboard, DIY can be a great alternative to spending money. Doable tasks like painting, cooking, or sanding are a safe bet to save.

Learn a New Skill – DIY can add to your arsenal of skills. The key is to start small and build up and not take on too much at one time. It’s much easier these days to get information on how to DIY something and learn it. DIY doesn’t have to involve blood sweat and tears. Plus learning how to fix things instead of just replacing them is a safe bet.

Sense of Accomplishment – Feeling like you’ve achieved something is a great high.  Do it Yourself does just that. You’ve figured it out, poured effort into it, and molded it to your will. Nothing feels as good as stepping back and seeing your hard work come to life.

CONS:
It Takes Time – Let’s be real, DIY can take a long time. When you’re not a pro it can take twice as long and become super frustrating. One of the lures of DIY is how easy it looks. A one day project can turn into a 3 week fiasco. Martha or that Youtube video makes it look simple but it’s not necessarily true when you do it yourself. Spending 4 hours on a cat ramp seems great but is that a good use of your time?

You are NOT a Pro – Sometimes a DIY project can cost you more in the long run. Taking on a project you don’t know enough about or taking on more that you can chew can mean a lot of risk for you or your home. Plumbing mishaps can lead to leaks and lets not even get into electrical. Be realistic about what you can and can not do. Hiring a pro can save you money and a headache.

Eye’s are bigger than your wallet – It’s easy to get ridiculously carried away doing DIY. That simple shelving unit has turned into a tricked out entertainment unit with hidden panels and ambient up-lighting. Going big means investing in supplies for something you may not end up
